About Phoenix

Phoenix was founded in 1861 by Jack Swilling, a former soldier who came to Arizona in search of gold. He and a group of settlers established a small farming community on the banks of Salt River and named it Phoenix, after the mythical bird that rises from the ashes. Phoenix grew slowly at first, but the construction of the Arizona Canal in the early 1900s brought water to the city and allowed for large-scale farming and agriculture. The discovery of copper and other minerals in the surrounding mountains also spurred growth, and Phoenix became a major transportation hub and center for industry. Today, it is the 5th largest city in the United States and a major center for business, golf, tourism and culture in the southwest region.
