When you think of North Scottsdale, golfing might be the first activity that comes to mind. This is not unfounded: Scottsdale has more than 200 golf courses across 180 square miles, so the sport is deeply embedded in the desert town’s culture and lifestyle. But the natural wonders of the Sonoran Desert and the McDowell Mountains lend themselves to more than just golf.
In this blog post, we’ll be exploring some of the best outdoor activities that North Scottsdale has to offer, from challenging summit hikes to hot air balloon flights. The next time you’re planning a visit – or if you’re a local, whenever you have a free weekend – make sure to add these activities to your calendar.

The McDowell Sonoran Preserve is a hiker’s paradise, boasting 225 miles of diverse trails suitable for all skill levels. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll surrounded by saguaro cacti and a variety of wildlife, or hankering for something more heart-pumping, you’ll have plenty of options in the vast preserve.
The most popular hikes include:
Pinnacle Peak Park also offers breathtaking trails and is doable for experienced hikers. These trails are among my personal favorites.
If you’re wondering how to get the best views of the Sonoran Desert without breaking a sweat, look into hot air balloon flights. As one of the most popular attractions for both tourists and locals, you’ll have a wide variety of options to choose from, including scenic sunrise and sunset rides. They’re also a great way to celebrate a special occasion, with many tour guides offering private rides for birthday celebrations and weddings.
Off-roading is an exhilarating way to explore the vast Sonoran Desert – some guided tours will even allow night-time excursions. These tours are also fantastic for learning more about the Sonoran’s ecosystem and cultural significance, while observing wildlife along the way. Those partial to something a bit more adventurous can go off-roading on their own through the challenging Seven Springs OHV Road, though this is only recommended for individuals with more experience.
Contrary to desert stereotypes, Scottsdale offers fantastic water activities thanks to nearby lakes and rivers. At Bartlett Lake, just 30 miles northeast, you can kayak, jet ski, and even go scuba diving! You can also go boating and fishing for bass, catfishing, panfish and crappie. Paddling across the lake allows you to view the majestic Tonto National Forest from afar, as well as catch a glimpse of local wildlife such as blue herons and bald eagles.
There’s something magical about exploring the desert on horseback. MacDonald’s Ranch offers not just horseback rides but a glimpse into Arizona’s cowboy culture with hay wagon rides, stagecoach adventures, and even full moon rides for a touch of nighttime mystique.
