Phoenix
Phoenix
Phoenix was founded in 1861 by Jack Swilling, a former soldier who came to Arizona in search of gold. He and a group of settlers established a small farming community on the banks of Salt River and named it Phoenix, after the mythical bird that rises from the ashes. Phoenix grew slowly at first, but the construction of the Arizona Canal in the early 1900s brought water to the city and allowed for large-scale farming and agriculture. The discovery of copper and other minerals in the surrounding mountains also spurred growth, and Phoenix became a major transportation hub and center for industry. Today, it is the 5th largest city in the United States and a major center for business, golf, tourism and culture in the southwest region.
There are 5 general areas in Phoenix: South, Central, Midtown, Uptown and North. Each offers its own history and culture, with many areas being revitalized and transformed with new life. South phoenix is mainly an industrial or older area of Phoenix, with its primary outdoor attraction of South Mountain Park and Preserve offering trails, activities, horseback riding and tourist attractions such as Dobbins Lookout or Mystery Castle. Central Phoenix is the heart of the city with downtown businesses, sports facilities and Sky Harbor International Airport. It offers modern multifamily complexes with resort amenities in downtown, historical neighborhoods and mostly older homes. Midtown is a mixture of older and newer homes and communities, members only Phoenix Country Club, Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Phoenix College. Uptown Phoenix is also a mixture of older and newer communities including many highly sought after areas such as the central corridor, Biltmore and Arcadia. It is home to the Biltmore Fashion Park, Arizona’s original outdoor luxury shopping center, John C. Lincoln Hospital and Phoenix Mountains Preserve which includes Piestewa Peak, a popular hiking destination. North Phoenix is the newest area to be developed with most residences having been built since 1980s at the “southern” side and increasingly newer the further north traveled. It includes major shopping and residential areas such as Desert Ridge & Paradise Valley Mall (currently under revitalization).
Phoenix is a vibrant city of over 1.7 million people and is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation, with a multitude of offerings to suit every taste ranging from cultural activities such as the arts or music, sporting events by professional teams Arizona Cardinals, Phoenix Suns, Arizona Diamondbacks and Arizona Coyotes, shopping, night life or outdoor activities including hiking, biking, golf and more. As well, Phoenix has a diverse culinary scene with a variety of cuisines and restaurants to choose from and is known for its craft beer and local breweries.
